Karst and caves in the evaporites of the Emilia-Romagna Apennines, a World Heritage Site

The international UNESCO Committee has included karst and caves in the evaporites of the Northern Apennines on the UNESCO World Heritage Site (Riyadh - Saudi Arabia, 19 September 2023).

The caves and karst phenomena are enclosed in the seven areas. The sites are officially recognized as universal value due to their characteristics of uniqueness and representativeness on a global level. All the caves that fall within the UNESCO site are registered in the Cadastre of natural cavities of Emilia-Romagna.

Caves, sinkholes and sinkholes require specific skills, adequate equipment and the presence of expert speleologists for the visit.
Most of these environments are found within parks, nature reserves and protected areas. Access depends on a specific regulation. The visits, however limited to a few adequately equipped cavities, can be carried out accompanied by authorized Speleological Guides.
For research and study visits you can make use of the Speleologists of the Groups affiliated to the Regional Speleological Federation of Emilia-Romagna (www.fsrer.it).
The Region relieves itself of any responsibility in this regard.

The Cave Registry of Emilia-Romagna

In our region the Regional Speleological Federation of Emilia-Romagna (FSRER) manages a list of all the natural cavities discovered and explored by the Speleological Groups operating in the area. The list which originates from a first nucleus of 122 caves inserted already in 1934 in the first National Land Registry, then kept in Postumia.

The WebGis of the natural cavities of Emilia-Romagna

Since 2009, the Geology, Soils and Seismic Area (AGSS) has been responsible for the IT management of the Cadastre of Natural Cavities of the Emilia-Romagna Region drawn up by the Regional Speleological Federation of Emilia-Romagna (FSRER). It was made a cartographic project for web visualization, for analysis and data query. A cartographic viewer that allows you to navigate within an interactive map, with many tools and many cartographic levels.
