First results of the "Peat Bog Project", the Apennines and the climate change

The first results of the project, based on the data analysis of the surveys carried out in the peat bog of Lago Moo (PC)

The first results of the project, based on the data analysis of the surveys carried out in the peat bog of Lago Moo (PC), have been published in the open access journal "Climate of the Past" of European Geoscience Union organization. European Geoscience Union is an international organization for applied research in the field of Earth Sciences and related disciplines, which brings together 20,000 members and promotes the most important annual meeting of the sector in Europe. This is in order to scientifically validate the results obtained so far, making them usable as highly reliable knowledge to support regional policies and strategies for adaptation to climate change.

In the catchment areas of the Emilian Apennines there are several peat bogs. They are of great interest for multidisciplinary scientific studies, including a natural archive to gauge past and future trends in extreme rainfall events.

The Emilia-Romagna Region, in particular the Geological, Seismic and Soil Survey in collaboration with the ARPAE-Servizio Idro-Meteo-Clima service, have been studying these peculiar catchment environments since 2017, through the Peat Bog Project. Three cores have been made: the pilot case study of Lago Moo (2017, municipality of Ferriere, Province of Piacenza), the second at the lake plain of Lagdei (2018, municipality of Corniglio, Province of Parma) and the last one carried out from 16 to 18 September in the Febbio-Pianvallese bog (municipality of Villa Minozzo, province of Reggio Emilia). All took place in areas of the Natura 2000 network, given the high ecosystem value of the peat bogs. The surveys in the Parma and Reggio Apennines also involved the territory of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine National Park.
