Bologna
Bologna was founded by the Etruscans under the name of Felsina. As a Roman metropolis it was known as Bononia. Later Bologna became a free Commune and then a papal city. There are various aspects of the city that make it one of a kind.
The oldest University Seat in Europe and gastronomic capital of Italy, Bologna is famous for the quality of life it offers its inhabitants as well as for its universally recognized civic virtues. Today, Bologna offers visitors one of the best preserved historic centers in Europe, the result of development over the centuries which proceeded by contrasts and new syntheses: a single monument. It is a homogenous complex. Towers, squares, churches and buildings are interwoven into a network of connecting porticos over 37 km long that provide for fantastic shadow play and perspective views. Bologna is an eminently scenographic city, integrating the architectural dimension with the urban dimension and establishing itself as a monumental organism on an urban scale.
