The international conference named "Karst Areas in Gypsum: Conservation, Management, and Use - Challenges and Opportunities for the UNESCO World Heritage of the Northern Apennines" was organized to celebrate the anniversary of the UNESCO World Heritage listing of the serial site.

It took place over four days: two days of conference (September 19-20) at the Sala 20 Maggio of the Third Tower in Bologna (headquarters of the Emilia-Romagna Region) and two days of guided excursions (September 21-22) to the UNESCO sites that are part of the serial site "Karst and Caves of the Northern Apennines," open to everyone.

The conference delved into the naturalistic peculiarities of the gypsum karst areas in Italy and Europe, and the various aspects and challenges of their management and use, with the collaboration of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, University of Bologna, the Regional Speleological Federation of Emilia-Romagna, and the managing bodies of the protected areas.

During the conference, the results of the project related to the new UNESCO site for Italy were also presented.
